Case Study one

Margaret’s Story

Margaret is a young mother of three; two young children and a teenager. Her husband is currently unemployed. Margaret had been working on and off until she got married and the kids came along. In early 2013 she was made aware of the Special Initiative for Travellers through the “outreach” activities of a job coach working with Employability Cork.

Although initially reluctant to seek a referral, Margaret was assured by the job coach of the supportive and welcoming nature of the service; and eventually referred herself in June 2013. With the support of her job coach, Margaret gained employment as a Traveller Community Worker for West Cork Travellers in January 2014, initially on ten hours per week; later rising to fifteen hours.

Margaret is delighted with this outcome and the ongoing support she continues to receive from her job coach.   According to Margaret “going to the Employability Service was the best thing I could do for myself and my family. It has given me confidence, independence and a sense of worth and for that I would like to give my deepest thanks to all”
